What drives the cost of a concrete block wall
Concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls, still often called cinder block, price out differently from a poured slab. This concrete block calculator works from the single CMU: how many you need, how many a mason can set per hour, and what each one costs at the site.
Counting CMU

It uses a standard coverage rate for an 8x8x16-inch CMU, about 1.125 units per square foot of wall face before you subtract door, window, or vent openings. This page prices the standard 8-inch CMU only; other sizes are not priced yet.
Material and labor
Material cost is per CMU, at the site, plus a small waste share for breakage and cuts. This is one flat national rate with no regional shift, unlike poured concrete material. The concrete block calculator prices labor the same way as the other job pages: one crew rate per CMU, covering layout, setting, mortar joints, and cleanup, times a metro wage figure from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A flat setup fee, our own guess since no public data exists for it, is why a small CMU order costs more per block than a full wall’s worth.
Why this estimate carries a lower-confidence flag
The concrete block calculator labels every number sourced, calibrated, or an estimate. The calibrated values here, the per-unit labor rate and the material price, draw on public data that is less steady across sources than the data behind poured concrete. Different sources describe the same kind of job with different guesses about mortar, rebar, and finish. Treat the total as a rough guide, and lean more on the labor and material lines than on the one bottom-line total.

Block wall cost by wall size
Length times height gives a wall's face area, which converts to a block count at 1.125 blocks per sq ft, the coverage rate for a standard 8 in CMU. A waste allowance then raises the material cost by a small percentage, our assumption since no public data covers it. See the parameter levels page for how every number here is graded.
The setup fee weighs far more on a small example than a large one: about 60% of the price on a 10 ft × 4 ft size, versus about 20% on a 40 ft × 6 ft size.
That same fixed cost shows up in the per-block price too: $16.06 to $31.92 on the smaller example, against $8.00 to $15.90 on the larger one. A bigger order spreads that flat fee over more blocks.

Doubling height doubles the block count on a 20 ft run, from 90 blocks at 4 ft tall to 180 at 8 ft. The total runs $1,010 to $2,010 at 4 ft tall, growing to $1,580 to $3,150 at 8 ft, since that flat fee does not double along with it.
On the larger example, material and labor split most of the price: about 17% material and about 63% labor, with the setup fee down to 20%. A small order flips that pattern, weighted toward the fixed fee instead.

What a retaining wall adds that this estimate leaves out
A retaining wall holds back soil in addition to its own weight, so it carries engineering demands a garden or foundation wall does not. This estimate prices the same CMU material and labor rate for any wall, without adjusting for that extra load.
Drainage behind it, such as gravel backfill and weep holes to relieve water pressure, is not priced here. Neither is a footing below the frost line, which a retaining wall needs and a short garden one often does not.
Reinforcement tied into a footing is common on taller retaining walls and is not part of this estimate's baseline either; the rebar calculator sizes that separately. Taller retaining walls often need an engineer's sign-off and a permit, costs this calculator does not include at all.
A taller wall is more likely to need that sign-off than a short one, and the exact height where a permit kicks in varies by local building department. Check locally before assuming a garden-wall estimate covers a retaining job.
